Road Design for Heavy Vehicles_edited.jpg

Project Overview

RSDH is delivering the Austroads project 'SRD6501 Road Design Guidance for Large Freight Vehicles'.

This project will develop evidence-based recommendations and, if applicable, updates to the Austroads Guide to Road Design (AGRD) so that a road designer can safely and consistently accommodate large freight vehicles (LFVs). Stage 1 will review national and international evidence, including NEF6394 outputs, and confirm the need for guidance changes.

Stage 2, if opted by Austroads, will undertake broad stakeholder engagement and draft urgent AGRD amendments.

Note that the project is not considering pavement design or deterioration.

Project Consultation

A key component of the  'SRD6501 Road Design Guidance for Large Freight Vehicles' is the consideration of the freight industry demand and road design considerations for wider (2.55 m and 2.60 m) LFVs.

The following surveys invites:

  • The freight industry to provide insights into the demand and desired operating routes for wider LFVs.

  • Road designers to share if they are considering wider LFVs in all or any stages of the road design process.

  • Road designers to identify how they might change their road design practices to accommodate wider LFVs.

  • Road managers and transport planners to identify routes that are planned to accommodate wider LFVs.
